News and Information
In November of 2009, I began a series of night paintings of downtown Pleasanton. One of them, "Tully's Coffee," (left) recently sold at Studio 7 Fine Arts. I really enjoyed doing this piece because of the wonderful light streaming through the windows and the people sitting outside, enjoying the warm June evening. This is a common sight in our downtown in spring, summer and fall. The minute the weather gets to 70 degrees or so, you'll spot diners in shorts at all the restaurants and gathering places. Pleasantonians love their downtown!
Because I like to include people in my twilight and evening scenes, I often look for opportunities to get out and photograph. I have to wonder though what people think when they see me out there with my camera. It's a little odd to be taking random pics of storefronts and restaurants. I know it embarrasses my kids but they're happy when their reward for putting up with their mom's photo adventures is a trip to Cold Stone or the "drive through dairy."
I tried a new surface for these new paintings. It's a sanded pastel paper mounted on gator board and I loved it. It holds layers of pastel and I was able to frame these pieces by mounting the painting to a matboard, creating a shadow box effect. The end result gives the paintings a kind of mysterious quality, perfect for night scenes.
This series includes "Pleasanton Reflections" and "Pleasanton at Night." Both originals are available at Studio 7 Fine Arts.
